Environmental Studies Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - Hobart and William Smith Colleges The Environmental Studies Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level to begin the fall of 2012. We seek a colleague with teaching and research interests that utilize Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS). The applicant is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, maintain a productive research program, participate actively in a liberal arts environment, and work with a culturally and socially diverse population. The scholarly field should complement the geographical and topical expertise of our current faculty. Specific teaching duties include introductory and advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) courses (using ArcGIS) plus additional courses at the introductory, core and advanced levels and potential participation in the Colleges’ general curriculum. The Environmental Studies Program is one of the largest majors on campus, and strongly encourages students to participate in a variety of community service opportunities, on faculty research projects and the Colleges’ summer research program. A Ph.D. in environmental geography or related field is strongly preferred. GIS Position – Genesee County Sheriff’s Office MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: AmeriCorps members must be at least 17 years old and a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S. There is no upper age limit. Basic GIS experience and knowledge is desired along with public safety experience with full-time or volunteer agencies including police, fire, and emergency medical service organizations. COMMITMENT: The member will sign a contract agreeing to complete 900 service hours over a specific period of time. All hours must be finished by 12/31/12 at the latest. The member will earn a living allowance of $6,000 while serving and qualify for an education award grant in the amount of $2,775.00 upon successful completion of the term. BENEFITS: Modest Living Allowance: Members are paid a stipend while they are serving. The living allowance is divided into equal payments and distributed biweekly during the term of service. It is not an hourly wage and does not vary based upon hours completed during specific pay periods. The living allowance is subject to FICA, Federal and State withholding taxes. Education Award: This award is earned upon successful completion of service and can be used to repay student loans or cover college costs. Members have seven years from the end of their service to use the education award. The education award is taxable income in the year in which it is used. Student Loan Forbearance: Members do not have to make payments on student loans during their term of service. A portion of the interest accrued is paid by the Corporation for National & Community Service upon successful completion of your service obligation. Internship Credit: Some assignments may be used to meet field placement requirements. Check with your professor to see if this might be a way to get paid while you are completing your internship hours.
